Although child sex crimes are a disgrace, they have existed in the world for a very, very long time. No nation has been absolutely free of it, and sadly, none will ever be. Children are abused all over the world, in fact, according to a survey, in the year 2012, there were 346,830 reported rapes or sexual assaults of individuals 12 years or older. Having said that, only around 30% of sexual assault cases are reported to authorities; 70% are not even forwarded to authorities.
Incest, rape etc. have all been practiced from the time of our ancestors and their ancestors. Following are some of the famous people/celebrities who have been offenders:
- John Newton (1725-1807) – He was an English sailor, in the Royal Navy for a period, and later a captain of slave ships. He got to be appointed as an evangelical Anglican cleric, served Olney, Buckinghamshire for two decades, furthermore, he went on to composing songs, known for “Amazing Grace” and “Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken”. Besides all of these, whilst John Newton was a slave trader, he raped slaves under his command, as a routine. Some of those slaves were as young as 10 years old. Even after his conversion to Christianity, when he became a priest, he continued to abuse slaves.
- Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) – He was an American Founding Father, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776), and the President of the United States (third) for the period 1801–1809. He was a passionate supporter of democracy and embraced the principles of republicanism and the rights of the individual with worldwide power. Jefferson’s affair with slave girl Sally Hemmings still leaves us speechless, even though it has been around 200 years.
Depending on the account, Sally was described between being 14 and 17 years of age at the
when the affair had started. What confirms this unbelievable story of the affair, is a DNA test that concluded Jefferson likely fathered at least one of Sally Hemmings’s children.
- Bill Wyman (Born in 1936) – This Rolling Stones star had intimate relations with 14 year old Mandy Smith when he was 48 years old. Even though he later on married her, had he been in America today, he would have been charged with sex crime allegations. Owing to how England has had a lot of “Sympathy for the Devil”, the issue is hardly raised by anyone. Nevertheless, Mandy Smith now advocates raising the Age of Consent to 18.
Anybody who has sex with an underage individual (the ages of consent are different for different nations), no matter what justification he or she provides, is considered guilty of a crime. Narrowly concerned with sexual violence, and with young ladies, initially, since the 19th century the age of consent has occupied a focal point in debates over the nature of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, and been drawn into campaigns against prostitution and immature marriage, struggles to achieve gender and sexual equality, and the response to teenage pregnancy.
